Mabel Warren Combs, 87

RICHMOND — Mabel Warren Combs, 87, the widow of Robert S. “Bob” Combs, passed away Friday morning, May 17, 2013 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

She was born on March 16, 1926 in Laurel County, the youngest of five children, born to the late William Albert and Nora Bowman Warren.

Mabel attended London City Schools and after graduation attended Sue Bennett College in London, Kentucky, and Eastern Kentucky State College in Richmond.

She moved with her family in the mid 1940s to Richmond. It was then she moved her church membership from First Baptist Church of London to the First Baptist Church of Richmond.

Mabel and her late husband, Bobby, owned and operated Combs Grocery at Brassfield, Kentucky, a business they continued to operate until they retired in 1998. She was a former bookkeeper for James Anderson & Son from 1947 until 1962. Mabel also was a member of the Madison County Democrat Woman’s Club.

Survivors include: her two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Shannon and Heather Wells Combs and James Warren and Nancye Farmer Combs; five grandchildren, Sarah Ashley Combs (Judah Short), James Clay Combs, John Conner Combs, Robert Braeden Combs and Whitley Carlyle Combs; and one great-granddaughter, Sophie Autumn Short; one niece, one nephew and several other relatives and close friends, including her dearest friend of 50 years: Mildred Reed.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by: two sisters, Virginia Ober and Myrtle Moren; and two brothers, Charles Warren and Oscar Lee Warren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at the First Baptist Church on the Eastern Bypass with the Rev. Bill Fort and the Rev. Robert Blythe officiating.  Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery.

The family will receive friends and relatives after 2 p.m. Monday at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Mickey Lutes, Doug Tudor, Ernest Lee Farmer, Kenneth Baker, Greg Ginter, Mike Reed, Vardy Jones and Judah Short.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: Frank Hendricks, Otha Chenault, Raymond Anderson, Frenus Masters Jr., Eugene Reed, Gilbert Miller, Cecil “Dude” Cochran, R.J. Spivey, Baxter Kelly, Parrish Johnson, David Tapley, Todd Maupin, Tim Miller, Glen Richardson, Floyd Richardson Jr. and Rick Congleton.
