Robert Sherman Fritz, 86

RICHMOND — Robert Sherman Fritz, 86, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2014, at the Hospice Compassionate Center of Richmond.

Sherman was born September 11, 1927, at Waco, Kentucky, to Coleman Christopher and Gertrude Adams Fritz, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a retired production supervisor for Westinghouse/Philips Lighting and had worked for Robinson & Turley of Richmond.

A Korean War veteran, he served in the U. S. Army and was awarded the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Richmond where he achieved the distinction of life deacon.

As a member of the Bluegrass Referee Association, he officiated high school and college games for more than 30 years throughout central Kentucky. He served for 34 years as a “30/45 second clock operator” for both the EKU men’s and women’s basketball games. Sherman was an avid fisherman and sports fan. He enjoyed woodworking, furniture making and gardening, taking great pride in raising his tomatoes.

Survivors include: his loving wife, Dolly Derryberry Fritz of Richmond; two daughters, Vickie Diane Fritz Moberly and Linda Fritz, both of Richmond; three sisters, Elberta Edwards of Midway, Geneva Edwards of Danville and Rebecca Sylvia Norris (Bill) of College Hill; one brother, Ray Fritz (Anna Kate) of Clarksville, Indiana; several nieces and nephews; and his special canine companion, Trudy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Coleman Chester Fritz.

Funeral services for Sherman will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at the First Baptist Church, 475 Eastern Bypass, Richmond, Kentucky. Bill Fort will officiate, assisted by Robert Vickers. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at the church.

Pallbearers will be Dorlan Grimes, Bert Gay, Bruce Whitson, Rick Thomas, George E. Ridings, Cliff Winkler, Justin Woosley and John Rollins.

Honorary bearers will be members of the Friendship Bible Class, Roger Williams, K.S. Park Jr., Harold Gibson Rice, Doe Moody, Octavia Abney, Dave Graham, Ken Clawson, Ken Prewitt, Glenn Adams, and Ben McPherson.

Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
