Thomas Paul ‘Tom’ Etherington, 92

RICHMOND — Thomas Paul “Tom” Etherington, 92, of Richmond, passed away suddenly Wednesday, July 2, 2014, after arrival at Baptist Health Richmond.

He was born October 30, 1921, in Versailles, Kentucky, to Thomas and Frances Battalia Etherington, both of whom preceded him in death.

Tom was a retired soil conservationist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. After his retirement, he was the caretaker of Million Park of Richmond for many years. Tom was an active member of the St. Mark Roman Catholic Church and a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Tom volunteered for many years with the Boy Scouts, the 4-H organization, and was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Association of Retired Federal Employees.

He was an avid fan of University of Kentucky basketball and football, the Cincinnati Reds, EKU basketball and football and all Madison Central High School sports teams.

Survivors include: his wife, Anna Manning Jones Etherington of Richmond; two sons, Thomas H. Etherington (Kimberely) of Richmond and James L. Etherington (Maria) of Lexington; five daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Etherington and Dottye Etherington Burton, both of Richmond, Carolyn Etherington Hornback (John) of McDonough, Georgia, Patti Etherington and Janet Etherington Short (Bill), both of Richmond; two sisters, Wanda Goodknight of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Catherine Mullin of Louisville.

He also leaves 11 grandchildren, John Thomas Hornback, Christina Breitmoser, Elizabeth Etherington, Kristina Huff, Holly Short, Brian Hornback, Ashley Wade, Siobhan Durham, William Short, Jeanna Burton and Brianna Etherington; three great-grandchildren, Jackson Stuart, Jakob Huff and Noah Huff; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

In addition to his parents, Tom was also preceded in death by: two brothers, John and Joseph Etherington; and one sister, Marjorie Giles; and a son-in-law Rob Burton.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 5, 2014, at St. Mark Catholic Church with the Funeral Mass following at 12:30 p.m. Fr. Jim Sichko will officiate.

Committal service, followed by burial, will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2014, at Camp Nelson National Cemetery, where military honors will be observed.

His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers, and the great-grandchildren will serve as honorary bearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Mark School, Richmond, KY 40475.
