Robert F. Sloe

BEREA — Robert F. Sloe, age 87, died Thursday, May 16, 2013, at his home in Berea, Ky.

Robert was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio, to the late Frederick and Mae Schneiter Sloe.

He began his career after graduating from the Spartan School of Aeronautics as an airplane mechanic. A licensed pilot and a lifetime aviation enthusiast, Robert flew his first plane in 1945 and loved flying the plane that he and friend Willie Curtis built in Robert’s garage.

Robert started the Experimental Aircraft Association in Berea, served on the Madison County Airport board for 30 years and was an EAA Technical counselor.

Robert is survived by: his wife of 34 years, Carolyn Sloe; his daughter, Jane Cargould of Cuyahoga, Ohio; his sons, David (Debbie) Sloe of Billings, Mont., Michael (Dee) Sloe of Martinsville, Va.; his stepdaughters, Debbie Duckwall of Independence, Ky., Susan (Earl) Merritt of Berea, Ky., his sister-in-law, Betty Gopp of New Philadelphia, Ohio: 13 grandchildren: and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the Hospice Care family and the friends who have sent thoughts and prayers to the family.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Lakes Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Shaffer and Rev. Truman Geesling officiating. Burial will be in the Berea Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
