Elizabeth Susan Overby, 93

MADISON COUNTY — Elizabeth Susan (Hackworth) Overby, 93, died Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at Compassionate Care Center in Richmond.

“Granny Lib,” as she was known to family and friends, was born August 20, 1920, in the Boonesboro Community of Madison County, Kentucky, to the late Joseph and Nettie Hughes Hackworth.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, J.B. Overby; one daughter, Sandra Cathryn Ward; one grandson, Kevin Lee Ward; a great-granddaughter, Jenni Rebecca Ward; one sister, JoDella Adams; a special brother-in-law, Floyd Adams; and two brothers, Bobby Earl Hackworth and Harold Hackworth.

She leaves behind: one daughter, Harleen Jo Lainhart of Richmond; one sister, Myrtle Jones (Walter); and six grandchildren, Jeff Lainhart, Michael Rodney Ward (Shirley), Doug Lainhart (Tena), Steve Lainhart (Jill), John Ward (Melanie) and Jimmy Shane Ward; one granddaughter-in-law, Chris Ward; and nine great-grandchildren, Mandy Elizabeth Kreimer (Nick), Ian Ward (Jennifer), Brandon Ward (Jessica), Joseph Ward, Ethan Ward, Sophia Grace Ward, Gabrielle Elizabeth Ward, Seth Ward and Alex Ward; four great-great-grandchildren, Lincoln James Ward, Kayleb Jackson Ward, Arie Kreimer and Korben Kreimer; and many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Wayne B. Land.

She loved nature and was a gifted gardener who could easily name flowers, trees and birds. Her favorite flowers were the iris and the rose. She took pleasure in simple things, the song of a mockingbird, the scent of lilacs, the color purple.

Granny was an avid reader who loved poetry, history and folklore. She knew tales and remedies most had forgotten and loved to share the ways of times past in anecdotes and stories. She wrote and recited poetry, knew traditional songs and could sing them. She loved Kentucky history and was especially proud to be a Kentucky Colonel.

She was as independent and self-sufficient as the pioneer ancestors she loved and admired. She was as comfortable driving a nail as threading a needle and could make anything she put her mind to, be it of cloth or wood. She could piece a quilt, build a book shelf, make blackberry jam, turn sour apples into apple butter or a child’s tears into laughter.

Granny was a caregiver and through her 93 years of life touched many. As a young girl and the eldest of five, she watched over her younger brothers and sisters. As a young mother she helped care for nieces and nephews, while caring for two daughters. In the days before hospice centers, she nursed the generation before her with tenderness and compassion, giving them the gift of final days at home among family and friends.

She cherished the role of grandmother and teacher to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She told them stories and songs, nursed them when they were sick and loved them unconditionally. And to them, Granny was special. No one else quite measured up.

Her impact on family, young and old, is profound and immeasurable. Those who have known her are fortunate and blessed by her presence in their lives. And although she is deeply missed, her love and influence shall remain with us.

A Memorial committal service will be conducted 11a.m. Saturday, December 14, 2013, at Madison County Memorial Gardens.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to Hospice Compassionate Care Center, 350 Isaacs Lane, Richmond, Kentucky 40475.

The Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home is in charge of Mrs. Overbyユs arrangements. www.cpcfh.com
