Dr. Truett Ricks,78

Former dean of EKU College of Law Enforcement

Formerly of Richmond — Dr. Truett Ricks,78, retired dean of the College of Law Enforcement (now the College of Justice and Safety) at Eastern Kentucky University for more than 14 years, died peacefully at the VA Hospital in Lexington on March 18, 2014.  

He was a member of the Rosedale Baptist Church, the Oleika Shrine and was a 50-year Mason.

Prior to becoming dean, Dr. Ricks served as an associate dean and professor at the University. Dr. Ricks served as a member of the Kentucky Crime Commission and the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, serving as the chair for the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, and as chair of its curriculum committee.

Dr. Ricks was the author of several books on Security and Police Management. After retirement, he was president of Ricks International Consulting Inc., that provides consulting services to clients in the United States, Great Britain and Nigeria.  

Dr. Ricks began his career in law enforcement as a clerk with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C. While serving as a patrol officer, and detective sergeant with the Memphis, Tennessee, Police Department, he received his B.A. and M.B.A. at the University of Memphis.

He received his Ph.D. at Florida State University where he also was employed as an assistant professor in the Department of Criminology.

Truett is preceded in death by: his father, Herman Ricks; and mother, Winnie Belle Crawford Ricks, of Bolivar, Louisiana; his wife, Betty Ricks; and daughter, Sherry Lynn Ricks.  

He is survived by: his son, Bobby and daughter-in-law Kathy of Berea; daughter, Tammy of Richmond; three grandchildren, Emily (Marvin), Laura (Jason) and Truett Graham (Ashley); two great-grandchildren, Emily and Tanner; brothers and sister, J.C. Ricks (Iris) of Amite, La., Donald Ricks (Emma Dean) of Eva, Ala., Martha Ann “Pris” (Robert) Garrison of Walker, La., and William Ricks (Pamela) of Hammond, La.; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, March 21, at the Richmond Church of Christ with visitation from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Interment will be at the Forrest Cemetery, Brownsville, Tenn.

The family asks that memorials be made to Potter Children’s home, 2350 Nashville Road, Bowling Green, KY 42101.
