Harry Austin Piland, 86

BEREA — Harry Austin Piland of Berea, Ky., died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, Ky., after a long fight with lung disease.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, on February 19, 1928, to Julia Flaherty and Homer Piland, Harry was a good Catholic boy and never missed a bingo night! He served our country in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1969 as a master sergeant. Harry was a beloved member of his community and very active in the Saint Joseph Berea Hospital Auxiliary. He founded the Patient Assistance Program which enabled low-income patients to get medicines or supplies so that they could live more healthy and productive lives. In 1998, he received the Volunteer of the Year award from the Berea Chamber of Commerce. He was also awarded for Excellence in Community Service by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 2006. He was a member of the Chicago Press Club and Berea College Founders Oak Club.

He was an avid sports fan and is sad to be missing all the hoopla of March Madness. A true Irishman, he loved to serenade his family with Irish ballads and enjoyed a green beer on St. Patrick’s Day. His Irish eyes are smiling on us now.

Harry is survived by: his wife, Virginia, of Berea; his daughters, Tracy Bose and her husband Gary of Deerfield, Illinois, and Lindsey Vogt and her husband Doane of Glendale Heights, Illinois. Several nieces and nephews from Toledo, Ohio, also survive.

A memorial service for Harry will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Union Church in Berea with the Rev. Kent Gilbert officiating. Visitation will be from noon until 2:30 p.m. at the church.
