J.B. Combs

Formerly of Berea

BEREA — James B. Combs (J.B.). formerly of Berea, went to be with the Lord on August 14, 2012, from his home in Chatsworth, Ga. after an extended illness.

He was a native of Perry County but moved, with his family at the age of four, to the Berea area.

He served his country for 20 years in the U.S. Navy and Air Force after which time he owned and operated businesses in Berea and Richmond.

He then moved his family to Georgia and worked at Shaw Industries for 13 years. Until January of this year, he had worked part-time for Walmart in Dalton, Ga., a job he enjoyed very much. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling. He was a Kentucky Colonel.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Enos and Virginia (Conn) Combs; two sisters, Ruth (Mrs. Harold) Hacker and Ruby Mae Combs; two brothers, Harold and Ronald (“Oz”) Combs.

J.B. is survived by: his wife of 38 years, Mary Abney Combs; four children, Duane Combs of Arkansas, Michael (Londa) Combs of Berea, Karen (Rob) Isaacs of Richmond and Stephanie Combs of Chatsworth, Ga.; two stepchildren, Teresa (David) Haney of Tennessee and David (Gail) Dickerson of Berea; one brother, Glen (Alma) Combs of the Berea area; two sisters, Gertrude (Vernon, deceased) Guinn of the Dayton, Ohio, area and Shirley (Charles) Burns of Richmond. Other survivors include four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two step-grandchildren, one aunt, Thelma Ball of the Berea area; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, August 17, 2012, at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Miller officiating. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until the service Friday.
