Maurice O. Broomfield, 88

RICHMOND — Maurice O. Broomfield, 88, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014, at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center of Richmond.

He was born, March 26, 1925, in Richmond, to William Smith “Smitty” Broomfield and Nancy Jane Todd Broomfield, both of who preceded him in death.

He was a WWII veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. Maurice, for many years was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church where he attended from childhood with his mother, who was a charter member. For the past 17 years, he served his Lord as a member of the Broadway Baptist Church family of Richmond, where he served as trustee.

As a young man, he met the Owsley County lady of his dreams, and after three years of courtship, he was married to Mary Virginia Brandenburgh, his loving wife of nearly 65 years, on March 25, 1949.

Maurice worked for several years at Bluegrass Hardware before he joined the H.K. Porter Company. He continued to work in that location after it evolved into the Exide Company from which he retired.

Maurice’s first love, after God, was his family. As a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, his love and dedication was unlimited. To his friends, he was faithful and true. He enjoyed whittling during work breaks and pond fishing with his family and friends. He loved the outdoors and often meditated while sitting outside under his shade tree or basking in the sunshine. Bluegrass music and old western movies brought him much enjoyment. Whether he was referred to as “Little Man,” “Marcy,” “Pop” or “Papaw,” he was loved by all who new him.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Mary Virginia, include: one son, Danny Broomfield and his wife Lynn; one daughter, Nancy Kay Newnam and husband Rick; four grandchildren, Dana Lynn Duerson and husband Jake of Berea; Kelly R. Chumley and husband David of Lexington; Eric T. Broomfield and wife Ashley of Nashville, Tennessee; and Randy T. Newnam and wife Amanda of Galloway, Ohio.

He also leaves four great-grandchildren, Mallory Duerson, Braden Broomfield, Summer Newnam, Emma Broomfield, Tyler Newnam and Cami Ann Duerson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his sisters, Marthalyn “Peggy” Agee, Nina West, and his brother, William L. “Billy” Broomfield.

Services for Maurice will be conducted noon Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Van Winkle and Rev. Robert Baker officiating. Burial will follow after graveside services at Madison County Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Carter Johnson, Charlie Harrison, Eric Broomfield, Randy Newnam, Jake Duerson and David Chumley.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Hospice Compassionate Care Center, 350 Isaacs Lane, Richmond, KY 40475.
