Robert Gene ‘Bob’ Young, 77

LEXINGTON — Robert Gene “Bob” Young, 77, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at his longtime home in Lexington.

He was born Feb. 24, 1936, in Estill County, Kentucky, to Clayton C. and Belle (McLaughlin) Young, both of whom preceded him in death.

A gifted and accomplished amateur golfer in his late teens and early 20s, Bob was a graduate of Madison County High School and attended Eastern Kentucky University, where he contributed and lettered as a member of the EKU golf team.

An extensive business career followed academic pursuits and an honorable discharge from peacetime service in the United States Army.

For nearly 20 years, Bob worked in a number of capacities for the Begley Drug Company and Big “B,” its dry cleaning division ― culminating to his election and service as the company’s chairman of the board of directors in 1974.

He was also an owner of MBC Products, a Florence, Kentucky, manufacturing company, for 21 years, an owner of the Four Seasons Dry Cleaners in Lexington for 11 years and, most recently, the principal owner of Young Communications.

For 55 years, Bob was a member of the Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Lexington, where he served as a deacon and in several capital campaign efforts. He also served as a board member of the Lexington Theological Seminary and was active in the American Red Cross.

Bob enjoyed his affiliation and membership in Lexington Lodge No. 1, F&AM and the Oleika Shrine Temple. He was for many years a member of the Lexington Country Club, serving for several of them on the club’s board of directors, and was recognized as a Fellow for the University of Kentucky.

Survivors include: Marlene B. Young of Lexington, his devoted wife of over 55 years; three sons, Michael R. Young and his wife Cynthia of Edgewood, Kentucky, Steven B. Young and his wife Lizabeth,of Lexington, Kentucky, and Gregory E. Young and his wife, Bettina, of Gulf Stream, Florida; and 10 grandchildren, Michael J. Young, Matthew O. Young, Robert S. Young, Maddeline N. Young, Blake B. Young, Alexandra H. Ragazzi, Nicolo D. Ragazzi, Daniel C. Young, Jack E. Young and Andrew T. Young.

Bob is also survived by a sister, Shirley McWilliams, of Berea, Kentucky, and two nephews, John McWilliams and Jim McWilliams.

Friends will be received at Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Lexington from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, Dr. Michael Mooty and the Rev. Elizabeth King will officiate a Celebration of Life at the church.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Arnold, Ray Ball, Bobby Ballard, Jamey Cashman, Bill Cashman, Patrick Cashman, Don Edwards, Don Hellmann, W. Brent Rice, and W.T. “Bill” Taylor.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Central Christian Church Building Fund, 219 East Short Street, Lexington, Kentucky 40507.

Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home of Richmond is in charge of services.

    Mrs. Lakes was born June 13, 1930, in Rockcastle County to James and Delia Johnson Abrams.
    She was retired from Brown & Williams Tobacco Company in Lexington. She was a faithful listener of the WLJC Gospel Broadcast and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

    Mrs. Hardy was born November 12, 1912, in Valley View, Kentucky. She was a homemaker, a retired seamstress and was of the Baptist faith.

  • Gary Lee Winburn, 69

    Gary Lee Winburn, 69, of Richmond, passed away Monday, April 14, 2014, at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.
    A native of Richmond, Kentucky, he was the son of Marcus and Johnetta Arch Winburn, both of whom preceded him in death. Gary had been an employee of the former Begley Drug Company and was a retired employee of Car Quest Auto Parts Store. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Richmond.
