Dr. Joseph Raymond Schwendeman, 82

RICHMOND — Dr. Joseph Raymond Schwendeman, 82, of Richmond, Ky., husband of Grace Hazel (Wilson) Schwendeman, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013.

Born December 13, 1930, in Fargo, N.D., he was the son of the late Joseph R. Schwendeman and Eithnea O’Donnell Schwendeman, brother of Mary Elaine Schwendeman and Elizabeth O'Donnell, and brother of the late Marion Schwendeman Lauer, Gerald Schwendeman, and Francis Schwendeman.

He was a graduate of Lexington Catholic High School in Lexington, Ky., and he held a doctorate in geography earned at Indiana University. Joe was a U.S. Navy aviator, retiring at the rank of captain. He retired from Eastern Kentucky University where he held positions from chair of the Geography/ Geology Department, to dean of Undergrad-uate Studies, and vice president for Facilities Administration.

Joe’s passion for aviation led to his founding of aviation programs in his communities, the latest being the establishment of the aviation degree program at Eastern Kentucky University, the only degreed university flight program in Kentucky. He also served on the Madison Airport Board for several years. Joe also farmed for many years in Madison County.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his sons, Joseph Jr. (Kay) of Albuquerque, N.M., Michael (Cindy) and Kenneth (Louise) of Richmond; two granddaughters, Alycia Pace (Daniel) and Clare; three grandsons, Daniel (Ryan), J. Russell (Melissa) and D. Clayton; and five great-grandchildren, Gareth, Annalise, Rosemary, Gavin and Hollyn.

He was a member of the Regina Pacis Catholic Latin Community of Lexington, Ky.

Private visitation for the family will be at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday, October 21, 2013, St. Peter Church, 153 Barr Street, Lexington, Ky.

The Mass of Honor and Remembrance will be conducted 7 p.m. Monday, October 21, 2013, at St. Mark Catholic Church, 115 Parrish Avenue, Richmond, Ky.

Private graveside services will be conducted at Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville, KY.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory are suggested to Taylor Manor, 300 Berry Avenue, Versailles, KY 40383.

    She was retired from Brown & Williams Tobacco Company in Lexington. She was a faithful listener of the WLJC Gospel Broadcast and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

    Gary Lee Winburn, 69, of Richmond, passed away Monday, April 14, 2014, at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.
    A native of Richmond, Kentucky, he was the son of Marcus and Johnetta Arch Winburn, both of whom preceded him in death. Gary had been an employee of the former Begley Drug Company and was a retired employee of Car Quest Auto Parts Store. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Richmond.
