North Brevard Funeral Home, Titusville, Fla.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —
Gladys Combs Newland, 90, was received in heaven on Tuesday, March 6, 2013, in Tallahassee, Fla., where she had resided for the past 12 years.
Gladys was born and raised in Richmond, Ky. It is there that she started a family with Carl T. Newland Sr., after his return from World War II.
The Newland family relocated to Titusville, Fla. in 1964, where Gladys worked at Florida National Bank and then retired from McDonnell Douglas Corporation after many years.
Gladys devoted countless hours to First Christian Church and was most often found looking after the congregation’s children in the nursery or baking for a reception in the kitchen. She found great joy in being a loyal and loving mother and grandmother. As a result, her care extended well beyond family to anyone who needed a warm meal or hug.
Gladys is preceded in death by her parents, Conley and Ethel Jackson Combs; her husband of 67 years, Carl T. Newland; her beloved son, Titusville Police Chief Carl T. Newland Jr.; and siblings Ed Combs, Norma Jean Williams and Allie Mae Combs.
She is survived by her adored daughter, Nancy N. Olewski of Tallahassee; son-in-law, John Olewski; daughter-in-law, Kathy Newland; grandchildren, John Z. Olewski III, Jenny Newland Osbon (Ron Osbon), Mark N. Olewski (Lola Jackson Olewski), Brian T. Newland; great-grandson, Jackson Turner Olewski; siblings Dorothy Shelton, Ruby Roberts, Thelma Bishop, Chan Combs, Bobby Combs; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Turner, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The memorial viewing was from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at North Brevard Funeral Home, Titusville, Fla.
Gladys will be interred during a graveside service at Oaklawn Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Gladys’ name be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.
