Kathleen Newby Kearns, 90

RICHMOND — Kathleen Newby Kearns, 90, died Jan. 18, 2013, in Columbus, Ohio.

Mother, wife, sister and beloved friend, she is preceded by her husband Grover S. Kearns, a decorated WWII veteran, and her sisters, Elizabeth Saylor and Marilyn McAlister.

She was born Sept. 18, 1922, to the late Oscar Taylor and Jessie Tudor Newby of Madison County.

She is survived by: her children, Priscilla Faye Sprengeler of Columbus, Ohio, and Grover “Sandy” Kearns of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four grandchildren, Stuart Kearns (Cindy), Jennifer Hazzard (Todd), Kenneth Gutmann (fiancée Libby) and Kathy Lewis (Jack); 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are: one brother, Claude Newby (Lida); and four sisters, Ellen Garrison, Ruth Hall (Charles), Lee Peters and Shirley Wilder (Don).

Kathleen grew up in Valley View and graduated from Newby High School. She worked at the Bluegrass Ordinance Depot in Richmond and with her husband at their business, Fayette Glass Co., in Lexington, before moving to Prescott, Ariz. There she began working for the Social Security Administration, for which she continued to work after returning to Richmond, and retired after 30 years of service.

Active in the community, she was a member of the Richmond Women’s Club, a member of Big Hill Avenue Christian and Madison Hills Christian churches of Richmond and, more recently, North Park Church of Westerfield, Ohio.

Visitation will be at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home in Richmond on Monday, Jan. 21, from 9 a.m. until the funeral service at noon.

Graveside services will follow at the Richmond Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Stuart Kearns, Kenneth Gutmann, Chuck Hall, Allen Newby, Michael Newby, Jay Scott Newby, Brent Garrison, John Peters, Frank Wilder and Steve Wilder.
