Helen Louise Smith, 83,

Cincinnati — Helen Louise Smith, 83, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away Saturday morning, January 11, 2014, at Cedars of Lebanon, in Lebanon, Ohio.

She was born September 15, 1930, in Berea, Kentucky, to Jeff Frank and Martha Dean Smith, both of whom preceded her in death.

She attended and graduated from Owensboro Senior High School and attended the Christian College of Columbia, Missouri. Ms. Smith received her B.S. degree in medical technology from the University of Kentucky in 1951 and received her M.Ed. degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1973. She also attended medical technology workshops at the University of Minnesota.

During the 1950s, Ms. Smith had held several positions at the Daviess County Hospital in Owensboro, including medical technologist, supervisor and bacteriologist. Her professional career continued during the 1960s and ’70s with a myriad of technology and instructing positions at the Cincinnati University Hospital, where she became the associate director of the School of Medical Technology at the University of Cincinnati in 1980. She continued in this position until retirement.

She was a member of many organizations including: Pilot Club International, Pilot Club of Cincinnati (President, 1965-66), American Society of Medical Technologists, Ohio Society of Medical Technologists, District 8 Society of Medical Technologists (President-Elect, 1968-69), American Society of Microbiologists, South Central Association for Clinical Microbiologists (Chairperson) and that association’s Education Sub-committee (3 years) and regional meetings chairperson for various committees, and the American Association of University Women.

Ms. Smith also found time to serve on the City of Cincinnati Committee on the Medical Technology and the Allied Health Committee of the College of Medicine at University of Cincinnati.

In addition, she held membership in: Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who Midwest, listed in its International Biography; Phi Theta Kappa, Delta Eta Chi, Phi Beta Kappa, National Register of Prominent American and International Notables, American Biographical Institute, and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

She served as deacon at Roselawn Baptist Church and College Hill Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a cousin, Doris Maltby, of Jacksonville, Florida.

Graveside services for Ms. Smith will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at the Berea Cemetery where interment will follow. There will be no visitation.

    Gary Lee Winburn, 69, of Richmond, passed away Monday, April 14, 2014, at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.
    A native of Richmond, Kentucky, he was the son of Marcus and Johnetta Arch Winburn, both of whom preceded him in death. Gary had been an employee of the former Begley Drug Company and was a retired employee of Car Quest Auto Parts Store. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Richmond.

    She was born March 23, 1940, in Garrard County, Kentucky, to the late Jasper and Mary Stella Moore Prewitt.
    Joyce was a graduate of Buckeye High School, class of 1959. She retired from the Madison County Detention Center as a deputy jailer. She loved raising flowers, working puzzles and watching UK basketball.
