Martha Elizabeth Wagers Shemwell, 92

BEREA — Martha Elizabeth Wagers Shemwell, age 92, died Sunday, June 23, 2013, at The Terrace in Berea.

Mrs. Shemwell was born in Berea to the late James and Hannah Kelly Wagers and was the widow of Robert Shemwell.

She was a graduate of Berea College and taught 37 years at Hazel Green Academy.

Mrs. Shemwell was a member of the Berea First Christian Church, where she served as church historian and sang in the choir.

Mrs. Shemwell is survived by: her nephews, Jimmy (Patsy) Wagers, Billy Wagers and Chuck (Jan) Wagers, all of Berea, and Scott (LaDonna) Wagers of Tallahassee, Florida. Several great-nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by: her sister, Gladys Wagers, and her brothers, Kelly (Louise) Wagers, Ralph (Dorothy) Wagers and Charlie (Issy) Wagers.

Funeral services for Mrs. Shemwell will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2013, at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Dr. Ed McCurley officiating.

Burial will follow in the Berea Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
