Alice Jeannette ‘A.J.’ Wintzer Heckman, 86

BEREA — Alice Jeannette “A.J.” Wintzer Heckman of Berea, Kentucky went to be with the Lord Thursday, February 27, 2014.

Alice Jeannette was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on December 19, 1927, to Edith Link Wintzer and Carl Frederick Wintzer, both of whom preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Stone Wintzer, and her husband, Richard Allen Heckman. She died peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Beginning in childhood, Alice Jeannette enjoyed theatre and art. She attended Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, majoring in English. Art came easily for her as a graduate student at Ohio State University where she created costume and scenery designs for plays. This study produced a master’s degree in speech and theatre which she taught at Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana. She studied under Margaret Webster, performed in summer stock at Woodstock, N.Y., and toured in the stage play, “Saint Claudia.”

At the age of 40, after living in Paris, France, she started to paint again and studied painting at Eastern Kentucky University. Her paintings were for sale at The Upstairs Gallery on Main Street in Berea. She is remembered for her large colorful paintings and for writing, directing and performing in several productions for the Berea College Harmonia Society. She enjoyed politics, gardening, travel and writing poetry. Her home in the woods gave her endless hours of joy from visiting birds and deer. She was a member of Union Church.

Family was everything to her. Survivors include: one daughter, Katherine Anna Heckman, and two sons, Warren Wintzer Heckman (Regina Cox) and David Douglas Heckman, all of Berea.

Grandchildren are: James Ian Heckman, Nicholas Wintzer Heckman, Emma Claire Heckman and Audrey Ann Heckman.

She is remembered fondly by her extended Wintzer family. She leaves two special friends: Shirley Bonnorant of Wapakoneta, Ohio, and Patty Isaacs of Berea, Kentucky.

The funeral will take place 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the First United Methodist Church in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Wapakoneta. Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until the service time Saturday at the church.

Visitation in Berea will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, at Davis & Powell Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Gus Wintzer, Carl Wintzer, Warren Heckman, David Heckman, Ian Heckman, and Nicholas Heckman.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice Care Plus, 208 Kidd Drive, Berea, Kentucky 40403.
