Charles Duane ‘Bob’ Johnson, 84

RICHMOND — Charles Duane “Bob” Johnson, 84, passed away Friday February 28, 2014, after a short bout with pancreatic cancer and several complications.

Bob was born January 6, 1927, in East Point, Kentucky, the son of the late John and Priscilla Greer Johnson. Charles became known as Bob as a toddler when an aunt referred to him as “Little Bo Bo,” and the name stuck as Bob.

He was a graduate of Floyd County High School in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. In 1944, he left the Eastern Kentucky mountains to join the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He served three years in WWII on a gunboat in the South Pacific, including the battle of Okinawa.

After an honorable discharge, Bob returned to Kentucky, attended Morehead State University and then began a career in sales and management for Womwell Auto Parts based in Lexington. After marrying Jeanette Williams, they settled in Richmond and raised their children. Bob was a successful small business owner for more than 20 years with two auto parts stores, the last of which he sold in 1986.

Bob had an infectious, fun-loving personality, was a great story teller and never met a stranger. Even during his last days, the hospital physicians and nurses commented on his politeness. He was a southern gentleman.

Bob liked good food, jazz, big band and gospel music. More than anything, he loved to be outside. For years, he had a large country vegetable garden and until last fall, he beautifully maintained his yard and flowers. In recent years, he enjoyed taking his beloved dog on daily walks, reading history and biographies, and relaxing on his large front porch, waving at and greeting people and sipping iced tea.

Bob was a member of First Baptist Church, Richmond, Kentucky, for more than 40 years and treasured his friends in the Friendship Sunday school class.

He is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Jeanette Williams Johnson, and his daughter, Terri L. Johnson, both of Richmond, as well as several wonderful nephews, nieces and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: a sister, Kathleen Johnson Shearer; a brother, William Earl Johnson; and his son, Robert Duane Johnson.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Fort officiating. Burial will follow at Madison County Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, West Main Street.

Pallbearers will be fellow members of the Friendship Bible Class of the First Baptist Church.

Memorial donations are suggested to the Lexington Veterans Administration Hospice Fund (GPF 1166), Voluntary Services-135 CD, VA Medical Center, 1101 Veterans Drive, Lexington, KY 40502-2236 or First Baptist Church Shut-in Ministry, 425 Eastern Bypass, Richmond, KY 40475.
