Rosella Simpson Whitaker, 86

Newby — Rosella Simpson Whitaker, 86, widow of Lucian Glenmore Whitaker, and long-time resident of the Newby Community, passed away Friday evening, February 28, 2014, at her daughter’s home.

She was born on November 21, 1927, in Madison County, to the late Frank Simpson and Bessie Cheeks Simpson Curtis Horn.

Rosella retired from the Madison County Detention Center where she was employed as a cook. She enjoyed her flowers and raising a garden, as well as spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Unity Baptist Church.

Mrs. Whitaker is survived by: five sons, Michael Whitaker (Angie), Terry Whitaker (Tina), Timmy Whitaker (Pauline), Jesse Whitaker (Kathy) and Roger Whitaker (Donna Rhodus); one daughter, Louise Ball (Ray); two brothers, Reather Simpson and Glen Curtis; one sister, Louise Winkler; one stepsister, Beverly Strayhorn; 24 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by: her stepfather, Willie Curtis; one son, Christopher Todd Whitaker; one daughter, Patricia Ray; one granddaughter, Misty Whitaker; and two brothers, Willie Curtis Jr. and William Curtis.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Dr. Dennis Brewer officiating.

Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Aaron Ball, Joseph Whitaker, Craig Whitaker, David Montgomery, Barry Montgomery and Steven Montgomery.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Unity Senior Sunday School Class.
