Nelson Young, 86

RICHMOND — Nelson Young, 86, of Richmond, passed away Monday, July 14, 2014, at his home.

He was born September 7, 1927, in Madison County, to the late George Young, and Edna Lowry Humes Davis.

Nelson was a life-long musician having played music all around the country. He started his career with Nelson Young and the Sandy Valley Boys, and was an original member of the Live Country Bear Jamboree at Walt Disney World in Florida. He worked at WVLK and WFIV radio, and WCPO and WKRC television, and was a member of the Renfro Valley Hall of Fame.

Nelson was a devoted humanitarian and was always looking for ways to do good for someone else – he did many benefit concerts, radio benefit drives, was a regular blood donor and was instrumental in keeping the Valley View Ferry open. He was a charter member of the Eastside Community Church and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Nelson is survived by: his wife of 52 years, Jane Stocker Young; one son, Dale Ray Young; four daughters, Pat Tolson (Dennis), Donna Jean Collett, Verlene Young Eaker (Doug) and Donna Estes Antebi (Steve); an honorary daughter, Johnna Estes Newby; 12 grandchildren, Cari Huntzinger (Robbie), Edgar Nathan Reese III (Kelly), Deana Barnhart (Will), Mindy Blodgett (Tyler), Keith Nelson, Leah Wyatt (Jason), Suzanne Collett, Jason Collett, Heather Ledbetter (Chris), Stephen Alan Estes, Stephanie Antebi, Sophia Antebi; 15 great-grandchildren, Jordan Huntzinger, Jacob Huntzinger, Hanna Huntzinger, Jared Huntzinger, Lydia Wyatt, Gabrielle Wyatt, Drake Wyatt, Riley Reese, Stunner Reese, Mackenzie Barnhart, Benjamin Barnhart, Corbin Ledbetter, Isabella Seastrand, Gavin Blodgett, Ava Blodgett, and two great-granddaughters on the way; as well as a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by: one son, Nelson Eugene Young; one granddaughter, Ashlee Morgan Reese, and one son-in-law, Brent Collett.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2014, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Dr. Virgil Grant officiating.

Burial will follow in Madison County Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Rickie Humes, Paul Humes, Danny Salter, Nate Reese, Stephen Estes and David Humes.

Chris Ledbetter will be an honorary pallbearer.
