Theda D. VanWinkle Abrams, 86, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Monday, June 16.
She was born October 19, 1927, in Jackson County, Kentucky, to Cassius Winfred and Elva (Eversole) Van Winkle.
Theda graduated from McKee High School in McKee, Kentucky, in 1946 and was one of 18 graduates. She married Dewey L. Abrams on May 17, 1947, in Covington, Kentucky.
She worked in the food-service industry and was employed by Miami University and the Talawanda School System. She retired from her cafeteria manager’s position in 1989.
Theda loved children and babysat many neighborhood children, as well as her treasured grandchildren, after her retirement.
She enjoyed fishing, especially trips on Brookville Lake, and she was an avid gardener, who canned and preserved fruits and vegetables during the summer. In the winter, she could be found sewing and quilting.
She was well known for her baking and cooking, and visitors were always treated to her wonderful home-cooked meals. Theda loved to feed people!
She enjoyed attending church and gospel singings. She often traveled to hear her brothers perform. She was a member of Taylor’s Grove United Baptist Church in Somerville, Ohio.
She is survived by: her husband of 67 years, Dewey L. Abrams; a daughter, Wanda L. (Tom) Renner; one son, Bernie D. (Susan) Abrams; a daughter Sandy A. (Bill) Freeman; four grandchildren, Mark A. (Erlena) Parker, Cory W. Abrams, Casey A. Abrams and Kelley A. Freeman; two great-grandchildren, Kash R. and Kinslee P. White; five siblings, Ruby Rice, Ruth Thacker, Boyd VanWinkle, Russell VanWinkle and Doris Cheek; special nephews, Gene Smith and Chris Abrams; and many much loved nieces and nephews, as well as a host of wonderful friends and neighbors.
Theda was preceded in death by: her parents; one beloved grandson, Morris Dwane White; three brothers, Earl, Everett and Orville VanWinkle; and a sister, Gilberta Smith.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 19, at Ogle & Paul R. Young Funeral Home, 5086 College Corner Pike, Oxford, Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted at Lakes Funeral Home, Berea, Ky., 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21, with visitation from 10 a.m. until time of service.
