John E. Smith, 83

RICHMOND — Mr. John E. Smith, of Richmond, son of the late John A. and Lillie Moore Smith, was born on Aug. 29, 1929 in Alumbaugh, Jackson County, Ky. He departed this life on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, in the Hospice Compassionate Center of Richmond.

He retired in 1990 after 33 years from IBM in Lexington. He was a member of the Victory Tabernacle Church of God at Moberly. He was a church musician, an avid gardener, carpenter, UK fan and pet lover. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his parents: he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Della Rawlins Smith; one brother, Clayton Smith; two sisters, Dora Cox and Reva Malicoate; and a half-brother, Wesley Smith.

He is survived by: two sons, Wayne Smith of Richmond and Hubert E. Smith (Regina) of Harrisburg, N.C.;  three daughters, Judy (Ben) Pardue of Canmer, Brenda Smith at home in Richmond and Patricia (Garrett) Gibbons of Mt. Vernon; his 11 grandchildren, Shelia (Billy) Tipton, Harold Rusty (Angie) Smith, Jonathan (Nikki) Smith, Jeffrey Pardue, Jennifer (Chad) Cottle, Sarah (Montana) Thomas, Lauren (Mike) Womble, Christopher Smith, Thomas Hicks, Samantha Roberts and Jessica Smith; 13 great-grandchildren; and one special great-great-grandchild, Tristann Nicole Stamper; one sister, Catherine Payne of Berea; and one brother, Henry (Merlene) Smith of Richmond, Ind. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at the Victory Tabernacle Church of God, with Rev. Geral Richardson and Rev. Phillip Payne officiating. Burial will follow in the West Irvine Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Pardue, Jeff Roberts, Billy Tipton, Christopher Smith, Thomas Hicks, Mike Womble and Garrett Gibbons.

The Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

    Mrs. Ethel Abrams Lakes, 84, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at the Compassionate Care Center.
    Mrs. Lakes was born June 13, 1930, in Rockcastle County to James and Delia Johnson Abrams.
    She was retired from Brown & Williams Tobacco Company in Lexington. She was a faithful listener of the WLJC Gospel Broadcast and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

    Mrs. Hardy was born November 12, 1912, in Valley View, Kentucky. She was a homemaker, a retired seamstress and was of the Baptist faith.

    Gary Lee Winburn, 69, of Richmond, passed away Monday, April 14, 2014, at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.
    A native of Richmond, Kentucky, he was the son of Marcus and Johnetta Arch Winburn, both of whom preceded him in death. Gary had been an employee of the former Begley Drug Company and was a retired employee of Car Quest Auto Parts Store. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Richmond.
