Jack Wiley Gannon Sr., 85

RICHMOND — Jack Wiley Gannon Sr., 85, of Richmond, passed away peacefully early Monday, November 18, 2013, at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center of Richmond, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born November 11, 1928, in Mayfield, Kentucky, the son of Neely Everett Gannon and Clara Troutt Gannon, both of whom preceded him in death.

Jack graduated from Mayfield High School and then attended Transylvania University from 1947-1949, where he majored in biology and minored in geology. From 1949-1951 he served as the assistant fisheries biologist for the Division of Conservation.

He married Helen Henderson of Lexington on June 10, 1950.

From 1951-1955, Jack served in the U.S. Air Force as Airman First Class and was an instructor in electronics and communication systems during the Korean War. He was stationed at Scott AFB, Belleville, Ill.

Jack transferred to the University of Kentucky where he attended from 1955-1958 and graduated with a bachelor of science degree with an industrial administration major. In 1959, Jack worked for Gannon’s Oil Company, managing the service station and bulk plant for his father. During this time he sold and serviced boats and motors. In 1959, he joined General Tire and Rubber Company in Mayfield as supervisor and remained until 1975, when he, with his wife, Helen, became owners and managers of the Westem Auto Store in Hickman, Kentucky, until 1984. In 1984, this position carried over to become Gannon’s True Value and in 2003 became Gannon’s Hardware, where he remained until 2012. He was a deacon and member of First Christian Church in Hickman.

Over the years, Jack was active in many civic and fraternal organizations, including his 62 years membership in the Masonic Lodge No. 369, F&AM, in Mayfield and the Masonic Grand Lodge of Kentucky. He was a 10-year member of the Rizpah Shrine Temple No. 877 in Madisonville. Jack also was a member of the Hickman American Legion and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Other activities included serving as the first president of Ducks Unlimited in Mayfield, serving two terms, HRCDC in Hickman, as past chairman and vice chairman of the Hickman Electric Board. Jack was also the past president of the Retail Merchants of Hickman, a member of the Hickman Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Hickman Townlift Project. He served as director of the Hickman 4th of July fireworks for 30 years. He served as a volunteer fireman for 30 years, retiring as captain and volunteer ambulance driver and rescue squad member.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, Helen (Henderson) Gannon, survivors include: four children, Terry Lynn Gannon Pinkston (and Bill) of Houston, Texas, Nancy Ann Gannon Miller (and Jerry) of Temple, Texas, Jack Wiley Gannon Jr. (and Molly) of Hickman, Ky., and David N. Gannon (and Beth Underwood Gannon) of Richmond; 12 grandchildren, Amanda Pinkston, Matthew Pinkston, Russell Pinkston, Danielle Miller, Kathleen Miller, Jennifer Miller, John Wiley Gannon, Catherine Gannon, Caitlin Gannon, Bryanna Gannon, Allyson Gannon and Neely Gannon.

Visitation for Mr. Gannon in Richmond, Ky., will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Masonic services at 7 p.m. Visitation in Hickman, Ky., will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 22, 2013, at the First Christian Church and noon Saturday, November 23, 2013, with the funeral service following at 1 p.m. CST.

Burial will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Mayfield, Kentucky.

Pallbearers will be John Wiley Gannon, Matthew Pinkston, Russell Pinkston, Greg Youree, Barry Cardwell, Rick Majors, Jared Coulson, Chris Coulson, and Bobby Joe Newton. Honorary bearers will be Phillip Amberg, Paul Billings, Jimmy Luker Sr., Bill Murray, Gerald Harris, Mike Sheehan, Chuck Murphy, Tim Langford, Alan Craddock and Marty Sewell.
