Charles Russell Coy, 84

RICHMOND — Charles Russell Coy, 84, beloved husband of the late Gay Alley Coy, died Friday, May 28, 2010, in his home surrounded by his family.

A native of Richmond, Ky., he was the son of the late Charles H. and Maudie S. Coy. During World War II, he served in the United States Army in the European Theater. Mr. Coy was a loving father and a faithful member of the Richmond Church of Christ. His devotion to God and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was total. Mr. Coy was a member of the Richmond Lodge # 25 F. & A.M.

Mr. Coy was an attorney and practiced law for 53 years. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and then received his LLD from the University of Kentucky School of Law in 1951, the year in which he was also admitted to the bar. He was a founding and lifetime member of the Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Mr. Coy started out in practice with Chenault, Coy & Sword and later went on to practice with Coy & Coy, and Coy, Gilbert & Gilbert until his retirement. In 1965, he served as President of the Kentucky State Bar Association, and in 1968, he was the Chariman of the Republican Party of Kentucky.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Coy was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Horne.

Survivors include: two daughters and a son-in-law, Reba Coy, and Russie and Keene Jones; his grandchildren, who brought him great joy, J.C. and Jaime Fleming, Coy Fleming, Chris Jones, Evan Jones, Taylor Coy Kammer and Charlie Coy Kammer; his great-grandchildren, who were a constant source of happiness, Sydney Beau and James Nash Fleming; three brothers, Ray A. Coy of Richmond, Hugh M. Coy of Fruitland Park, Fla., and John M. Coy of Richmond; and one sister, Reba Clark of Fairfield, Ohio.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, June 1, 2010, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with funeral services immediately following, officiated by Pastor Mike Johnson. Private interment will follow on Wednesday at the Richmond Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be J.C. Fleming, Chris Jones, Evan Jones, Jesse Ferguson, Steven Coy, Blaine Clark Jr., Coy Clark, Brady Clark and Jonathan Ross. Honorary pallbearers will be J.T. Gilbert, Jerry Gilbert, Mark Shepherd, Carla Roberts and Giles T. Black.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Hospice Care Plus, 208 Kidd Drive, Berea, KY 40403.
