RICHMOND — Bernice Harrison Hisel, 93, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013, at Richmond Health & Rehab Complex-Kenwood.

She was born November 19, 1919, in Jackson County, to Vernon C. and Grace (Miller) Harrison, both of whom preceded her in death.

Bernice was a retired teacher who taught for 26 years. She began teaching in one-room schools and later taught in a four-room school where she taught seventh and eighth grades and was the head teacher. She was a very dedicated teacher, and several of her former students visited in later years to tell her how much she helped them.

She was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church of America.

Bernice is survived by: one daughter, Carolyn Hisle of Richmond, Ky., and by two granddaughters, Jonda (Tom) Tippins of Georgetown, Ky., and Jill Gabbard Taylor of Richmond, Ky. She also is survived by: two sisters, Eileen McWhorter of London, Ky., and Zola Hisel of McKee, Ky.; and one brother, Herbert Harrison of Richmond, Ky.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: three brothers, Laban and Clyde Harrison of Irvine, Ky., and Beckham Harrison of Richmond, Ky.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Calvin Hays officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. before the service.
