Charles Gentry Burns, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Friday, September 27, 2013, at his home at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Combs Burns.
Charles was born May 30, 1934, in Madison County, the son of Gentry and Maggie Rose Burns.
He served in the United States Army and later retired from IBM.
Charles was a well-known local, national, and international clogging instructor for more than 35 years. He taught in such places as Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Czech Republic. Charles was a member of Red House Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by: two children: Kimberly (Keith “Bo”) Caudill of Richmond and Kevin Burns of London, Ky.; four grandchildren, Zachary Caudill of Chicago, Ill., and Lee, Logan and Emily Caudill, all of Richmond; one brother, Randol (Barbara) Burns; five sisters, Jeanette Holland, Rosetta Baker, Georgia “Bunny” (Earl) Rhodus and Jimmie (Billy Ray) Murphy, all of Richmond, and Helen (Jack) Harrison of Ashland, Ky.; several nieces and nephews; his extended family and his clogging family and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Burns.
Funeral services for Charles Burns will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at the Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at Madison County Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Zachary Caudill, Lee Caudill, Logan Caudill, Emily Caudill, Tim Burns and Doug Rhodus.
Honorary pallbearers will be Greg Murphy, Neil Burns, Michael Burns, Matt Burns and special friend, David Smith.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, September 29, 2013, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Hospice Care Plus, 208 Kidd Drive, Berea, KY 40403.
