James William Harris, 89

RICHMOND — Mr. James William Harris, 89, of Richmond, formerly of Union City, passed away Tuesday evening, January 29, 2013, in the Compassionate Care Center.

Mr. Harris was born on June 29, 1923, in Madison County, the son of the late Haden and Iva Dozier Harris.

He was a retired farmer and a retired rural mail carrier. Mr. Harris was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a Master Mason for over 50 years, being a member first at the J.D. Hamilton Lodge and later the Richmond Lodge No. 25. He was a charter member of the Union City Ruritan Club.  

He was a member of the Union City Christian Church where he had served as deacon and elder. He had taught Sunday school there for 30 years. That class is now known as the J.W. Harris Sunday School Class.

Mr. Harris is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Anita Pearson Harris; two daughters, Avonda Le Noe (Robert L.) of Lancaster and Sue Ellen Breeding (William G.) of Monticello; one son, James Gene Harris (Kathy D.) of Christiansburg, Va.; one brother, Harold Harris (Evelyn); two sisters, Jean Fortney (Jep) and Sue Ann Long; eight grandchildren, Nancy Noe, Bill Noe, Tommy Noe (Tara), Mary Garnett Zollner (Chris), William Harris Breeding, Matthew Harris, Andrew Harris and Isaiah Strickler; three great-grandchildren, Micah Noe, Morgan Noe and Mason Zollner; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Harris will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, February 1, 2013, at the Union City Christian Church, 2473 Union City Road, with Bro. R. Chip Denief officiating. Burial will follow in the Madison County Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Church.

Pallbearers will be: Bill Noe, Tommy Noe, Chris Zollner, William H. Breeding, Matthew Harris, Andrew Harris, Wm. Haden Harris and Wayne Long.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of the J.W. Harris Sunday School Class.

Donations can be made in memory of Mr. Harris to the Union City Christian Church Building Fund, or to the Hospice Compassionate Care Center.

The Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

    William S. Scott, 93, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Baptist Health Richmond.
    He was born December 14, 1921, in Bay Springs, Mississippi, to James and Sybil Thigpen Scott, both of whom preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death in 2009 by his wife, Virginia Webb Scott.

    In 2002, she moved to Richmond to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Jerrilyn and Jack Dyer. She lived in their home until mid 2010 before moving to the Kenwood Nursing Center.
