Donald Gene Cummins, 54

RICHMOND — Donald Gene Cummins, 54, husband of Jamie Payne Cummins, passed away, February 7, 2014, after a long illness.

Donald was born on May 21, 1959, in Rockcastle County, the son of Don Cummins of Mt. Vernon, and Nina Cummins, of Somerset.

A 1977 graduate of Clinton County High School, he received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Kentucky. While in college, he worked as an intern for Kentucky Utilities and upon graduating in 1982, became a full-time KU employee. He remained with the company throughout his career, working as both an engineer and a customer service representative to KU’s industrial customers.

He was a devoted Christian man, dedicated to his faith in God, his church and his family. He was a deacon of Red House Baptist Church in Richmond, and he served the church in many ways, including as a coach of Upward basketball and as a Sunday school teacher.

He enjoyed being outdoors, going camping and especially playing golf.

In addition to his parents and his wife of 28 years, Donald is survived by: one son, Evan Cummins, and one daughter, Rachel Cummins, both of Richmond; three sisters, Vicki Cummins Stokes of Somerset, Sherri (David) Spears of Somerset and Nina (Shawn) Hines of McKinney; his father- and mother-in-law, Jackie and Jennie Payne of Mt. Vernon; two sisters-in-law, Jenna (Tim) Arvin of Lexington, and Janelle (Houston) Venters of Charlotte, N.C.; and many, many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who loved and will greatly miss him.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at Red House Baptist Church, 2301 Red House Road, with Dr. Deron Cobb officiating.

Burial will follow at Freedom Baptist Church Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, February 10, at the church.

Pallbearers will be David Spears, Shawn Hines, Rodney Todd, Jon Spears, Isaiah Super and John Payne.
