RICHMOND — Rex Childers, 74, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Baptist Health-Richmond.

Mr. Childers was born on December 13, 1938, in Breathitt County to the late Bruce and Lillie May Nix Childers.

He had worked as a carpenter and was a United States Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam War.

He enjoyed hunting, cooking, watching Westerns on television and was known for his laughter. He was a member of the Linden Street Baptist Church.

Mr. Childers is survived by: his wife of 45 years, Wilma Brewer Childers; two sons, Rex Wayne Childers and wife Laura of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and Matthew Childers of Richmond; his brother, Tex Childers and wife Lorraine of Blandenboro, South Carolina; four sisters, Alice Noble and husband Roy and Evelyn Bowling, all of Jackson, and Hazel Cox and husband Russell and Brenda Childers, all of Richmond; three grandchildren, Stefanie Barnett, Amber Lauryn Childers and Gabriel Alexander Childers; and five great-grandchildren, Destanie McGill, Triniti Barnett, Lirik Bernard, Melodi Bernard and Matthias Omar Bernard.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Childers is preceded in death by: two brothers, Carl Childers and Timothy Childers; and three sisters, Margaret Childers, Isabella Walters and Lillie Duke.

The funeral service for Rex Childers will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in the Madison County Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at Combs, Parsons & Collins.

Pallbearers will be Rex Wayne Childers, Matthew Childers, Gabriel Alexander Childers, Joshua Freese, Eric Short, Stephen Bernard and Johnny Francis.
