W.T. Griggs, 80

Newby — W.T. Griggs, 80, of the Newby community, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2013, at the Compassionate Care Center.

Mr. Griggs was born in Madison County on January 19, 1933. He was the son of Gene and Elizabeth Singer Elson.

Early in life, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Later, in his hometown, he became known as “the milk man,” delivering milk from house to house for many years. 

He went on to retire from Bluegrass Hardware having worked in sales and as a mechanic.

In 1955, he married Alta Marie Hembree Griggs who passed away in March 2008.

Mr. Griggs is survived by: his son, Mike Griggs and wife Phyllis; his daughter, Janet Lynn Shanks and husband Eugene, all of Richmond; his brother, Mason Griggs and wife Virginia; three grandchildren, Clay Thomas Griggs, Ashley Obergfell and husband Chris, and Lauren Kilgore and husband David; and four great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Adain, Tristan and Bobbi.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Shelby Griggs.

The funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Bro. Scott Guiley officiating.

Visitation will be after 9:30 A.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Billy Curtis, Stacey Curtis, Eugene Shanks, Neal Winkler, Rick Farthing and Greg Farthing.
