Charles Stiles, 85

Madison County

MADISON COUNTY — Charles Stiles, 85, husband of the late Flossie Taylor Stiles, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014, in Richmond, Kentucky, at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center.

Charlie was born May 1, 1928, in Etowah, Tennessee, the son of the late Floyd and Lonesome Georgia Stiles.

Charlie was the owner of Independent Service Garage in Richmond, Kentucky. He helped organize the first Madison County Rescue Squad and worked tirelessly during the 1974 tornado that struck Madison County. He also had a great love of cats, caring for many homeless stray cats.

Charlie was Kentucky’s oldest actively serving Rescue Squad officer. He was the recipient of several prestigious honors, including the 2009 Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service, a Kentucky Colonel’s commission and a commission as Colonel Aide de Camp to the Kentucky State Police Commissioner.

Survivors include: three brothers, Robert Stiles, Clayton Stiles and Dwight Stiles; and one sister, Regina Blanton. In addition to his parents and wife, Charlie was preceded in death by his son, Woody Stiles; and three sisters, Charlotte Gilley, June White and Thelma Creech.

Funeral services for Charlie will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 6, 2013, at the Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Hospice Chaplain Jim Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Robert Mink, John Chappell, John Kelly, Glen Wise, James Briley and Paul Green. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Madison County Rescue Squad.
