H.S. HOOPS: Lady Pirates roll; Southern, Model fall

Despite messing three key performers, the Lady Pirates still rolled to an easy win Saturday at home.

Jordan Sandefur had 24 points and seven assists as Berea (2-1) topped Oneida Baptist, 82-47. Victoria Sexton had 14 points and 13 rebounds as the Lady Pirates picked up an easy win even after committing 33 turnovers.

Berea raced out to a 22-6 lead in the second quarter, but after Sandefur was whistled for her third foul the Lady Mountaineers rallied.

With Sandefur on the bench, Berea had just a 32-26 lead at half.

The Lady Pirates stormed back and out-scored Oneida Baptist 30-6 in the third quarter.

Alex Horn had seven points and 10 rebounds, Ashley Sizemore had 13 points, Emily Keyser had eight points, Holly Musick and Mckenzie Perry each had six points, Allie Maynard had two points and Hailee Varwig had one point.

Berea is set to return to action Monday at home against Estill County.



Sayre 49, Lady Patriots 41



Eighth-grader Mallie Cornett had another double-double, but the Lady Patriots couldn’t overcome a bad shooting performance Saturday in Lexington.

Model (2-1) shot just 21 percent from the field (12-of-56) and suffered a 49-41 loss to Sayre. Cornett had 22 points and 14 rebounds and Kasi Schneid added 11 points as just three Lady Patriots scored.

Hayley Hunt added 11 points.

Model trailed just 22-21 at halftime, but shot just 19 percent in the second half. Sayre opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run and the Lady Patriots never got back within three points the rest of the way.

Cornett played all 32 minutes and was 14-of-18 from the free throw line. Sayre had 34 points in the paint.

Model is set to return to action Monday at home against the Kentucky School for the Deaf.

Somerset 69, Madison Southern 48

The Lady Eagles had 31 turnovers and suffered a 68-48 loss Saturday on the road against Somerset.

Briana Lanham had 21 points and 16 rebounds for Southern (1-1). Samantha Parms had 12 points and Kelley Freeman added six points.

The Lady Eagles are set to return to action Tuesday at Jackson County.
