OVC BASKETBALL: Colonels set to wrap up homestand

RICHMOND — The Colonels will be looking for their 20th consecutive non-conference home win as they finish off a four-game homestand tonight in McBrayer with a 7 p.m. battle with Brescia.

The EKU record for most non-conference wins is 21 straight from 1977-78 through 1980-81. The Colonels are 42-7 in home non-conference games under coach Jeff Neubauer.

EKU is coming off a closer-than-expected 82-68 win over Alabama A&M on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs erased a 26-point Colonel halftime lead to get to within six points with three minutes to go. But the Colonels got a couple of big defensive stops and hit 10-of-10 free throws down the stretch to pull away for the win.

Glenn Cosey’s game-high 23 points led the way for the Colonels in the win. Three others — Tarius Johnson, 14, Corey Walden, 16 and Eric Stutz 11 — also were in double figures.

Alabama A&M was the first EKU opponent all season to shoot more than 35 percent from behind the three-point line.

Cosey leads the Colonels in scoring at 19.7 points per game. He is second on the team in rebounding, averaging 4.7 per game, and leads the team in assists with 5.5 per game. Three other players are also averaging double figures on the season — Marcus Lewis at 13.8, Walden at 12.7 and Orlando Williams at 10.8 points per game.

Brescia enters tonight’s contest with a 4-3 record on the season, with wins over Kentucky Christian, Boyce College, Columbia International and Crown College. The Bearcats lost to Ohio Christian, Taylor and IU-South Bend, as well as an exhibition game to Murray State 97-69.

This is the second-ever meeting between the two teams. EKU leads the series 1-0. The Colonels won 107-43 on Dec. 3, 2011. EKU is 46-24 all-time against current members of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC).
