H.S. BASKETBALL: Hawkins reaches 2,000 point mark as Indians roll

RICHMOND — When Dominique Hawkins became Madison Central’s all-time leading scorer last weekend at the Chick-fil-A Classic in Charleston, W.Va, there was no on-court celebration.

The moment passed without Hawkins even realizing what he had just accomplished.

And that’s just what the Madison Central coaching staff had planned.

With another major milestone within striking distance, they wanted the standout senior to be honored at home in front of his family and friends.

“We tried to keep it a secret,” Central coach Allen Feldhaus said. “We knew he broke it last week and we wanted to wait and try to catch him off guard. That was pretty neat.”

Hawkins scored his 2,000th career point Saturday as the Indians rolled to an easy win in Richmond over Conner, 66-51. The senior needed 12 points to reach the milestone. He finished with a team-best 14 points and also had six rebounds and three assists.

Hawkins reached 2,000 on a three pointer with just more than six minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The senior was once again totally unaware of his monumental accomplishment until play was stopped and he was presented a commemorative ball marking his historic accomplishment by Feldhaus and principal Elmer Thomas.

“I thought there was a foul or something,” Hawkins said of the on-court ceremony. “I had no idea.”

Hawkins is the first boys player to reach 2,000 points at Madison Central. He passed Aaron Morris (1,980) on the all-time scoring list last Saturday as the Indians defeated South Charleston (W.Va.).

Olivia Terry (2000-2004) is the highest-scoring girls player in school history with 2,467 points.

“I’m just blessed to be able to score 2,000 points and play with a great team and to have an incredible coach,” Hawkins said.

Hawkins’ milestone moment was the highlight of a somewhat sloppy, yet solid victory for Central.

Back on the court for the first time in a week, the Indians jumped on top 12-2 and had a 23-8 lead after the first quarter.

Still, Central (12-3) shot just 40 percent and was never able to really put the Cougars (6-6) away.

“I thought defensively we played well,” Feldhaus said. “We are the worst in the world about playing down to our competition. I don’t know what it is. That’s just us.”

Central had a 33-15 lead at halftime but Conner opened the second half on a 10-2 run and got within single-digits twice in fourth quarter (43-34 and 45-36).

“We started getting a little sloppy and we had to take it up a notch,” Hawkins said.

Central pushed back out to a comfortable lead after Quan Taylor, George Walker and Hawkins all hit three pointers.

Taylor and Daniel Parke each had 12 points and Ken-Jah Bosley had 10 points for Central. Hunter Stocker added eight points and 10 rebounds. Walker had four points, while Sam Jones, Demarcus George and Chris Conner all had two points.

Hawkins had eight points at halftime and finished the game six-of-nine from field (1-of-1 from three) and had four steals.

“He ended up only shooting nine times,” Feldhaus said. “That’s Dominique. That’s why he’s a good teammate.”

Central is set to return to action Saturday against Holy Cross (Covington). Game time is 7:30 p.m.
