STATE GOLF: Central tied for fourth

RICHMOND — The Madison Central golf team posted a very balanced performance Friday in the opening round of the KHSAA State Golf Tournament at Bowling Green Country Club.

The Indians’ top four players — Devin Gabbard, Dylan Kelley, Carter Skipworth and John Cornelison — all posted rounds of +7, 79. Grant Willoughby finished at +16, 88.

Central will head into today’s final round tied for fourth place with Mason County (+28, 216). St. Mary (+20) is in third place, West Jessamine is in second place (+17) and St. Xavier is leading the field (+5).

Cornelison got off to the best start Friday for Central. The senior birdied the first hole and was +3 at the turn. Cornelison had one birdie and five bogies on the back nine.

Skipworth, a freshman, was -1 through two holes, but bogied No. 3 and then had a double bogie on No. 4. The freshman finished the front nine with four-straight bogies, but did post a birdie on No. 12.

Kelley had a bogie on the first hole, then posted a birdie on No. 2 to get back to even. He bogied four of five holes before finishing out the front nine with a birdie. Central’s No. 2 player had four more bogies on the back nine.

Gabbard got off to a rough start with a double bogie on first hole. The senior had a birdie on No. 11 to get back to +3, but had four bogies on the final seven holes.

Willoughby had a double bogie on both No. 1 and No. 4 and made the turn at +11.
