H.S. SOCCER: Central snaps winless streak

RICHMOND — The Madison Central Indians picked up a much-needed win Thursday, 2-1, over 11th Region rival Franklin County in Richmond.

Goals by Cameron Wilson late in the first half and Hunter Jackson mid-way through the second period were all Central needed, thanks to some stellar work in goal by senior Ben Durham.

The only Flyers goal came on a penalty kick with 21 minutes remaining in the game.

With the Indians entering the contest winless in their past six games, Central coach Evan Sutherland said he made a few adjustments to his team’s formation and attack against the Flyers.

“We changed our tactics a little trying to get a couple numbers forward to try to control midfield,” Sutherland said. “I thought our three guys in the middle, Logan Baker, Peyton Netherton and Luc Powell did a great job tonight of controlling the middle.”

The moves proved successful, but it took a little while to iron out a few kinks, but Durham kept Franklin County at bay early on, coming up with several great stops of shots in the game’s first 20 minutes.

And after a few shaky moments early on, the Central defense took control of the game and the offense became much more aggressive.

“When you switch from four to three in the back you are down a player so you have to defend really compact and stay together,” Sutherland said. “We didn’t do that early, but we adjusted as the game went on and did a much better job.”

The win came at a good time for the Indians, Sutherland said, with three of their final four games against Lexington teams all on the road.

“This was a good win against a good team in our region. It’s a building block going forward because we have East Jessamine at home on Tuesday, then three big games against Lexington Catholic, Henry Clay and Lafayette before district.”
