H.S. SOCCER: Pirates pick up road win, Eagles top Corbin, Lady Pirates win

RICHMOND — The Berea Community boys soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 1-0 win Tuesday at South Laurel.

Neil Claytor scored the only goal of the game 25 minutes into the first half. The junior striker got loose on a breakaway and ripped a shot inside the far post.

Claytor hit the post in the second half as well and also had a strong defensive performance for the Pirates.

Gabriel Gomez Jr. was switched to sweeper and led the defensive effort as Berea keeper Trey Terrill earned his first shutout of the year.

The Pirates are now 3-7 on the season.

Berea is set to return to action Saturday at home against Model.

Madison Southern 2, Corbin 0

The Eagles couldn’t find the net until the closing minutes Tuesday on the road against Corbin.

But, Madison Southern scored twice in the final eight minutes and earned a 2-0 win.

Tanner Kidwell scored with eight minutes left on a cross from Garrison Copper. The combo hooked up again with three minutes left when Kidwell sent a cross to Copper, who scored.

With the win, the Eagles move to 9-3-1 on the season.

“They clogged up the middle and made it tough on us,” Southern coach James Ray said.

Elijah Sexton earned the shutout in goal for Southern.

The Eagles are set to return to action Monday at Pulaski County.

Lady Pirates 9, Whitley County 0

The Lady Pirates bounced back from a district loss at home Monday to Model to pick up a lopsided win on the road.

Berea Community (7-8) defeated Whitley County 9-0 on Tuesday.

Taylor Powell had five goals, Izzy Whatley had three goals and Emma Williams also scored.

berea is set to return to action Oct. 7.
