H.S. SOCCER: Boyle County topples Eagles, 2-1, in Berea Cup

BEREA — The Madison Southern Eagles (8-3-1) suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Boyle County (8-4) Thursday in the annual Berea Cup.

Despite two questionable calls which nullified two early goals, the Eagles still held a 1-0 lead at the half thanks to a nice goal by Tanner Kidwell with just over six minutes remaining in the half.

Kidwell put a great ball fake on the Rebels goalie, sending him to the ground, then chipped in a short shot from the left side of the net to give the Eagles the lead.

The score remained 1-0 in a very physical second half until the Rebels tied it with 21:37 remaining on a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box call against the Eagles.

Boyle County took the lead with another goal three minutes later.

The Eagles continued to battle and had several good shots on goal over the game’s final 15 minutes, but just were not able to put one in.

Southern coach James Ray said he liked the way his team responded after the early calls went against them.

“As far as some of that stuff, we still had opportunities to score and that’s what you want to have, fighting through adversity,” Ray said. “They could have easily packed it in and gotten some stupid red or yellow cards and we didn’t do that. I’m proud of how hard we played tonight. This obviously is one that we would have liked to have snuck out with a win. It just is what it is. We weren’t able to do it.”

Though disappointed with the loss, Ray said his team will continue to improve.

“I can guarantee you that my kids are going to keep playing hard and we’ll keep getting better and we’ll see where we get to in the postseason,” Ray said.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Corbin for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
