BOWLING: Leagues ready to roll into action

RICHMOND — Classic Doubles

This league opened its new season Thursday night with nine teams.

Beverly Shearer bowled the highest game of the new season in any league with a 254 score which was part of a 598 series. Tina Hisle rolled the second-best women’s game (179) and series (490).

The best men’s series were 594 by Mike Huser and 571 by Bobby Abrams. Huser and Abrams tied for the high men’s game at 212.

Senior state tournaments

Bowlers from across the state will converge on Richmond this fall to bowl in the Kentucky State Seniors tournaments at Galaxy.

The state tournament for senior men is scheduled for Sept. 28 and 29, while the senior women’s tournament will take place on Oct. 5-6.

Each tourney will feature competition in six age groups — 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74 and 75 and over. The winners in each group will advance to the national seniors tournaments in Reno, Nev. in July 2014.

USBC senior records

Because the Galaxy Center is hosting the Kentucky state tournaments for men and women this fall, I felt it would be interesting to take note of some of the records for senior bowlers as recognized by the United States Bowling Congress. Several of the most impressive records are noted here.

Oldest bowler in a sanctioned league: Men — 107 Gene Scala, Jericho, NY in 2012-13; Women — 103 Maude McIntyre, Fresno, Calif. in 1993-94, Jeralean Talley, Inkstar, Michigan in 2002-03 and Lucy Severine, Johnstown, Pa. in 2008-09.

Oldest doubles team: 203 — Art Shaver (103) and Bill Hargrove (100) in the 2001 USBC Open tournament.

The oldest bowler to roll a 300 game: Men — 90, a man in Fullerton, Calif. in 2012 who asked that his name be withheld. (Was he being stalked by an old girlfriend?) Women — 81, Ollie Harbin, Overland Park, Kans. in 2009.

Highest three-game series by a senior bowler: Men — 890 by Don Markgraf, Wisconsin at age 71 in 2001; Women — 827 by Karen Pullman, Utah at age 58 in 2001 and Carol Teel, Florida at age 53 in 2009.

The highest average for a senior bowler: Men — 250 by Jim Hosier, of New Jersey in 2011-12 at age 53; Women — 225 by Carol Teel from Florida in 2011-12 at age 56.
