OVC HOOPS: Colonels trying to finish strong

MADISON COUNTY — The Colonels (20-6, 9-3 OVC) will be looking for their 21st win of the season today when they take on Jacksonville State (15-9, 7-6 OVC) at 7 p.m. in McBrayer Arena.

Thursday’s 80-69 win over Tennessee Tech gave the Colonels their first 20 win season since 2009-10 and the eighth in program history. It also made coach Jeff Neubauer the first coach in program history to lead his team to three 20-win seasons.

The win also clinched the Colonels a spot in their 11th consecutive OVC Tournament. EKU, Murray State, Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech are the only teams that have made each of the last 10 tournaments.

Senior Mike DiNunno, who lead the Colonels in scoring at 15.8 points per game, scored a team-high 21 points in the win over Tennessee Tech.

Sophomore forward Eric Stutz had another good game as well, scoring 14 points and pulling down seven rebounds, continuing his strong play of late. In his last four games, Stutz has averaged 12.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 2.3 steals and 1.5 assists per game.

Glen Cosey is averaging 15.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game, while Corey Walden is also averaging double digits with 11.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

Jacksonville State comes into the game having lost its last two games to Tennessee Tech and Morehead State, both on the road.

Senior Forward Tarvin Gaines leads the Gamecocks in scoring at 15.7 points and five rebounds per game. Senior guard Ronnie Boggs is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11 points and is the team’s top rebounder, averaging 5.6 rebounds per game.

JSU is ninth in the OVC in scoring average at 65.9 points per game, but it is first in the conference in scoring defense, giving up an average of 63.5 points per game.

The Gamecocks average 45 percent shooting from the field and 36 percent from behind the three-point line and are getting outrebounded by 5 per game.

The Colonels won their previous game against Jacksonville State 73-62. In that game, Walden had a career-high 28 points and DiNunno added 24 points.

Eastern leads the all-time series 12-7 and is 8-0 in games played in McBrayer Arena.
