H.S. BASEBALL: Southern falls at Clay County, 6-2

RICHMOND — The Madison Southern Eagles dropped their seventh game in a row Tuesday, 6-2 on the road at Clay County.

Once again, fielding mistakes played a big part in a loss for coach Dusty Hon’s Eagles.

Southern committed seven errors in the contest that were too much to overcome.

The Eagles got off to a good start, scoring a run in the first inning to take a quick lead.

But the Tigers quickly came back to score two runs in the second inning to go up 2-1.

Southern tied it at 2-2 with a run in the top of the third, but that was all they could get even though they pounded out seven hits in the game.

Hon said the combination of defensive mistakes and lack of timely hitting was frustrating.

“We just couldn’t come up with the big hit when we needed it. We left a lot of runners on base and just couldn’t get it done at the plate,” Hon said. “And we had seven errors and that didn’t help us any. A lot of those were ground balls in the infield and we picked it up and bobbled it once and then we decide to go ahead and fling it and make a throwing error. It’s just very frustrating.”

At the plate, Easten Shouse continued his good hitting of late, finishing with a pair of hits in the game after being moved into the leadoff spot by Hon.

Jonothan Ross also had two hits in the contest, while Devin Vanover, Griffin Norris and Conner Buchanan each had one single in the game.

The Eagles return to action today when they host cross-town rival Berea Community at 5:30 p.m.
