H.S. TENNIS: Model tops Lafayette

RICHMOND — The Model Laboratory boys tennis team got strong performances in singles competition and rolled to a convincing win Thursday over a solid 11th Region rival.

The Patriots won five of six singles matches and picked up a 7-2 victory over Lafayette at Arlington Country Club.

“Good win today over a talented Lafayette team,” Model coach Ric Hernandez said. “Should give us nice momentum leading into the Central Bank Invitational this weekend.”

Gus Benson struggled a little bit in the opening games of his match at No. 1 singles with Nathan Gillespie, but still earned an 8-2 win.

Model’s only singles loss came at No. 2, where Jack Frisbie fell to Taylor Harris, 8-6.

The other four Patriot singles players combined to lose just four games. James Logue defeated Alex Money, 8-3, Nolan Kelley topped Jonathan Griggs, 8-0, Cole Wilson defeated Hayden Marinaro, 8-0, and Blake Benson beat Rylan Toland, 8-1.

Model’s top doubles team, Frisbie and Logue, suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss.

The Patriots other two doubles teams earned wins. Kelley and Blake Benson defeated Griggs and Money, 7-5, 6-3, and Wilson and Nate Frisbie beat Marinaro and Toland, 8-6.

Model is set to return to action Saturday at the Central Bank Model Invitational at EKU. The Patriots will take on some of the better teams in the state in the event.

The field includes, Covington Catholic, South Oldham and Whitley County.
