OVC BASKETBALL: Florida A&M next test for Lady Colonels

RICHMOND — The Lady Colonels will be looking to bounce back from last week’s disappointing home loss to Ohio when they take on Florida A&M today in the Southern Miss Thanksgiving Tournament in Hattiesburg Miss.

The Lady Colonels shot a season-low 29-1 percent from the field in the 60-52 loss to the Lady Bobcats.  It was EKU’s first home loss since Jan. 5 of last season . 

Senior point guard Marie Carpenter was held to only nine points by the Lay Bobcats, snapping a 16-game streak in which she had scored in double figures.

But the senior point guard still leads the Lady Colonels in scoring at 22.8 points per game. Despite an 0-5 shooting night from behind the arc, Carpenter still ranks eighth nationally in three-point field goals made  per contest with  3.67 per game.

Senior forward Shelly Harper led the way for the Lady Colonels  against Ohio with a team-best 13 points.

Sophomore Miranda Maples chipped in with five points and pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds, while freshman guard Michaela Hunter also had a good game against the Lady Bobcats, scoring a career-best nine points .

She also gave the Lady Colonels a  much needed boost of energy when she came off the bench early in the game when they were struggling to score.

Florida A&M enters today’s game with a 4-1 record after winning its last three contests, including Saturday’s 65-57 victory over Webber.

The Lady Rattlers will put  a veteran team on the floor against EKU, led by 5-foot-9 senior point guard Jasmine Grice.

Grice enters the contest averaging a team-best 22.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

Junior guard Taneka Rubin is second on the team in both points (14.4) and rebounds (5) per game.

Senior guard Kimberly Sparkman is also averaging in double figures pouring in an average of  10.4 points per game.

The winner of today’s game will play either, host school, Southern Miss, or Mississippi Valley State in the championship game at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The loser of the EKU - Florida A&M game will play in the tournament’s consolation game, also on Saturday, at 2 p.m.

The Lady Colonels continue their road trip with a matchup against Marshall on Dec. 3 in Huntington Wv.

EKU returns home for one game when they take on Missouri State on Dec. 5.
