Borders named to Jerry Rice Award Watch List
Redshirt freshman Devin Borders has made a major impact on this year’s Eastern Kentucky University football team and it hasn’t gone unnoticed.
On Wednesday, The Sports Network announced its initial 20-player watch list for the 2013 Rice Award and Borders made the cut.
A 6-foot-5 wide receiver from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Borders currently leads the Colonels in receptions (21), receiving yards (277) and receiving touchdowns (four) through six games.
Borders has also played a huge role on EKU’s special teams where he has blocked three kicks this year, including two field goal attempts at Eastern Illinois on Sept. 28.
The Jerry Rice Award, named for the legendary wide receiver who played in the FCS (then Division I-AA) at Mississippi Valley State, is given to the top first-year player in the FCS, whether a true freshman or a redshirt freshman. The award will be voted on by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries following the regular season.
