OVC FOOTBALL: Berry not just a one-hit wonder

RICHMOND — The video of Jordan Berry’s fake punt/pass against Morehead State went viral after it was posted online last month.

That clip got more than 1 million views on YouTube.

But, the Australian born kicker certainly isn’t just a one-trick, one-hit wonder.

Not at all.

For the past four seasons, Berry has been one of the best punters in the Ohio Valley Conference — and he proved that again Saturday in a win over Austin Peay at Roy Kidd Stadium.

The senior connected on a 77-yard punt in the third quarter of the Colonels’ 38-3 victory. The kick was the longest of Berry’s career and was the second-longest punt in EKU history.

The kick fell just one yard short of Bob Plott’s school record (78 yards), which was set in 1966.

Berry punted three times in the game, for an average of 48.7 yards, and all three kicks landed inside the Austin Peay 20-yard line.

On Sunday, the senior kicker was named the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) National Punter of the Week  by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA).

Berry’s final punt in the win over the Govs spanned nearly the entire field. The senior line up to kick from the EKU end zone and the ball finally rolled dead at the Austin Peay 16-yard line.

Berry’s previous best kick was a 75-yard punt in 2010. He also had punts of 69 and 67 yards in 2011.

For the season, Berry is averaging 40.7 yards per punt — which is fifth in the OVC — with 12 of his 25 punts landing inside the opposition’s 20-yard line. Berry has hit at least one punt of more than 50 yards in five of the six games.

For his career, Berry has 7,932 yards on 194 punts — an average of 40.8 yards a kick.

Berry was a First-Team All-OVC selection in 2010 and a Second-Team All-OVC selection in 2011.
