GLENMORE: Colonel golfers take to the links

RICHMOND — Last Monday and Tuesday (March 4 and 5), both Eastern Kentucky University golf teams were in action.

The ladies placed fourth in the Time Warner Racer Classic hosted by Murray State University. The 36-hole event was shortened to 18 holes when Tuesday’s play was rained out.

Senior April Emerson led the Lady Colonels with a score of 80, which tied for seventh best score overall. Anna Gleixner and Kristen Dorsey both had scores of 81 and tied for 11th overall. Becky Sharpe had an 83 and tied for 20th. Rachel Welker shot an 88 and tied for 34th. Nicki Henry, playing as an individual, was the star of the day for EKU as she parlayed a nice 79 into a tie for fifth overall.

Murray State, 312, won the team title by nine shots over second-place Lipscomb, 321. Austin Peay, 324, was third, one stoke better than EKU, 325. Belmont, 326, finished one shot behind the Colonels for fifth.

The Lady Colonels will return to action on March 18 at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate hosted by Tennessee Tech in Sevierville, Tenn.

Go get’ em Ladies!

The EKU men’s golf team opened its spring schedule with an 11th-place finish at the Samford Intercollegiate in Hoover, Ala. Eighteen teams participated in this event at the par-72, 7001 yard Hoover Country Club.

Stuart Witt led the Colonels and tied for 32nd in a field of 94 golfers. His three-round total of 225 was nine shots over par. Taylor Riggs was next with 230 and Zack Butler and Garrett Hinton both had 231, while Johan Eriksson had a 232.

Auburn captured the title with a three-round total of 865. Vanderbilt, 876, was second. EKU completed play with a 54-hole total of 911, one shot better than Tennessee Tech.

The Colonels participated in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate last weekend and are set to return to action March 18 at the Tennessee Tech Invitational.

Madison Central — The Comeback Kids!! WOW!!!

On Sunday, I traveled to Rupp Arena in Lexington and watched the most exciting basketball game I have ever witnessed in my 89 years in this old world.

I saw the gutsiest, most miraculous finish I have ever seen in any ballgame. The “never say die” Indians pulled a victory out of the fire after overcoming a 16-point deficit. Ballard even had a four-point lead with 20 seconds left.

After coming from behind in three games and winning the 96th Sweet Sixteen crown I don’t know whether to call Central the “Comeback Kids”, the “Whiz Kids”, the “Miracle Workers,” or the “The Team of Destiny.”

How about all four?

All I can say is congratulations and “You da team!”

Mahalo for brightening my life.

Madison Country Club               loses a good friend

Last week, Ernie Durham, a long-time member of the MCC, left us for that great course in the sky.

Ernie was a generous, fun-loving man who lived life to the fullest. His heart was full of love for his family, friends and life. He will surely be missed by everyone who knew him.

Our hearts go out to his wife, Judy, and all of his family.

May you be in God’s foursome forever.
