H.S. BASKETBALL: Botts gets 1,000th point in Model loss, Berea, Southern fall

Register Staff Report

RICHMOND — Model Laboratory senior Darrian Botts scored her 1,000th point Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Patriots fell to Burgin 72-59 on the road.

Botts finished the game with 36 points, followed by Haley Hunt with 14 and Abby Vickers with nine.

Model hung tough with the Lady Bulldogs, trailing only 28-21 at the half.

But when Hunt was forced to go to the bench for most of the third quarter, Burgin began to pull away.

“We played well with them, but when Haley had to sit for a lengthy time got behind,” Model Coach Bobby Storie said. “We were in the game the whole time till there in the third quarter when they pushed out to a lead and we just couldn’t catch up.

Model is back in action on Thursday at home against Oneida Baptist Institute.

North Laurel 78, Southern 71

The Eagles couldn’t hold on to a fourth-quarter lead Tuesday at home against North Laurel.

Madison Southern (0-3) was up by five points with three minutes left, but the Jaguars rallied for a 78-71 victory.

Tanner Kidwell had 20 points and Trevor Huff added 15 points for the Eagles.

“That was probably the best game we’ve played,” Southern coach Shane Buttry said. “It’s still a loss. But, we are getting better every game.”

North Laurel hit four three-pointers in the fourth quarter and Southern missed five free throws in the final quarter.

The Eagles were 19-of-24 from the free throw line. North was 21-of-26 from the line.

The Jaguars out-scored Southern 25-23 in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles are set to return to action Thursday at home against Garrard County.
