OVC BASKETBALL, SOFTBALL: Walden, Fobbs honored

MADISON COUNTY — Eastern Kentucky University redshirt sophomore Corey Walden was named as the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week on Monday, the league announced from its Brentwood, Tenn., headquarters.

 The award is the fourth this season for Walden.

 Walden, a 6-foot-2 guard, helped EKU to a 38-point victory over Austin Peay.  He finished with 15 points — second most in the game — four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

 In an ESPN BracketBusters game at Horizon League leader Valparaiso, the Daytona Beach, Fla., native scored a game-high 20 points to go along with four rebounds and a steal.

 In two games, Walden averaged 17.5 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal.  He made 57 percent of his shots from the field, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc.

 Walden played his freshman season at Stetson before transferring first to Brevard Community College and then to Eastern Kentucky. He missed the 2011-12 season due to an injury.

 The Colonels will close out the 2012-13 regular season with a pair of road games next week beginning at Tennessee Tech on Thursday. Tip-off in Cookeville is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET.

Fobbs named OVC Co-Soptball Player of the Week

Freshman Sarah Fobbs was named the adidas co-OVC Softball Player of the Week following her performance at this past weekend’s Frost Classic. The Colonels went 4-1 at the three-day tournament and outscored the opposition, 49-23.

 Three of Fobbs’ four hits this past weekend were extra-base hits, including her first two collegiate home runs. Both of her home runs were three-run shots. Fobbs, a native of Lakewood, Calif., posted a 1.375 slugging percentage, drove in eight runs and led EKU in batting average (.500) over the five-game stretch at the Frost Classic.

 Jacksonville State first baseman Sara Borders shared Player of the Week honors with Fobbs as Borders reached base at least twice in all five of her games last week to boast a .550 on-base percentage.

Eastern Kentucky, which is off to its best start in 10 years at 7-2, returns to action next weekend at the Under Amour Classic hosted by USF in Clearwater, Fla.
