H.S. TRACK: Rothermel, Nnoromele take titles at regionals

RICHMOND — Madison Country track and field standouts claimed individual and relay championships at a pair of regional meets Saturday across the area.

At the Class AA, Region 6 Meet at Boyle County High School, Madison Southern took second place in the girls competition and third place in the boys competition.

At the Class A, Region 6 Meet at the University of the Cumberlands, Model Laboratory took second place in the girls competition, while Berea Community was fourth. In the boys competition, Berea was fourth and Model was sixth.

Model’s Hannah Nnoromele and Southern’s Michael Rothermel had the best individual performances Saturday by Madison County athletes. Nnoromele, a senior, took first place in both the 800-meter dash and the 1,600 meter run and was second in the 3,200 meter run. She was also a member of the Lady Patriots’ 4x400 relay team, which also took first place.

Rothermel, a senior, won the regional title in the long jump and triple jump and was part of the school’s 4x100 relay team, which also took first place.

The top two finishers at each event at each regional automatically qualify for next week’s KHSAA State Meet in Louisville.

Southern also had six other first-place finishes.

Kate Freel finished first in the high jump, Casey Dionne won the 100 meter hurdles, Damien Harris took the title in the 100 meter dash, Clayton Barnes won the discus competition, while the school’s girls 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams also took first place.

Freel also took third in the 300 meter hurdles, McKenzie Bicknell was second in the 100 meter dash and third in the 200 meter dash, Maria Melhuish was second in the 3,200 meter run and third in the 1,600 meter dash, Amanda Collier was second in the 200 meter dash, Lydia Sharp was fourth in the long jump and Kerrigan Moberly was second in the high jump.

Dionne was also fourth in the 300 meter hurdles, Derek Howard was fourth in the discus and Caleb Dunbar was fourth in the high jump.

Model’s Janie Ward and Reagan Cole also won individual region titles. Ward took first place in the 100 meter hurdles and was also second in the 300 meter hurdles and third  in the triple jump.

Ward was first in the 3,200 meters and second in the 1,600 meters.

Model’s Darrian Botts was second in the 100 meter dash, long jump and triple jump and was third in the high jump.

Hannah Durbin was second in the 400 meter dash, 800 meter dash and the pole vault.

Melaine Welsey was third in the 100 meter hurdles, Tanner McVey was second in both the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles and was third in the shot put, Nathan Riniger was second in the 400 meter dash and Alex Clawson was third in both the long jump and triple jump.

The Berea Community girls 4x100 relay team took the regional title, while the 4x200 team took second and the 4x800 team finished third.

Berea’s Hannah Haycraft was second in the high jump, Bailey Rosenbarker was third in the 800 meter dash and 1,600 meter run, Raymond McKinney was second in the 3,200 meter run and third in the 1,600 meter dash and Lincoln Satterwaithe was second in the 1,600 meter run.

The Berea boys 4x800 relay team took third place.
