H.S. SOFTBALL/BASEBALL: Lady Indians drop a pair

RICHMOND — The Madison Central softball team lost a pair of games Thursday in London, falling to South Laurel, 3-2, and North Laurel, 5-2.

The Lady Indians (8-14) had leads in both games, but couldn’t hang on for wins against a pair of Top 25 teams.

“I’m crazy proud of how we played against two great teams,” Central coach Daniel Rogers said. “Lot of fire and drive tonight. Even though we didn’t get a W, I loved how we didn’t give up. That will pay off big-time the next two weeks.”

Against South Laurel, Central fell behind 1-0 in the third, but took the lead in the fourth inning. Kirstin Spillman singled and Katie Brock doubled. Emily Frakes but down a bunt that scored Spillman and Brock also crossed the plate because of an error on the play.

South Laurel scored two in the fifth inning to re-take the lead.

Sarah Arthur, Spillman, Brock, Summer Fleeman and Jadelyn Rice were all 1-for-3 for Central.

MacKenzie Wilder went the distance, allowing two earned runs and six hits, while striking out three.

Against North Laurel, Central took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Fleeman reached on a dropped third strike and came around to score after MacKenzie Humphrey put down a sac bunt.

North scored two runs in the fourth, but the Lady Indians regained the lead with a run in the fifth. Brock doubled and scored to put Central up 2-1.

North Laurel added four runs in the bottom of the inning to take command of the game.

Brock was 3-for-4 with two singles and a double. Frakes was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.

Wilder went all seven, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out one.

Central is set to return to action today against Southwestern at the Sports Den Classic in Somerset.
