GLENMORE: Colonels headed to Auburn for NCAA regional

RICHMOND — By winning last week’s Ohio Valley Conference championship, the EKU women’s golf team secured its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Regionals.

On Monday night, the Colonels found out they will be playing in the East Regional on May 9 through 11 at the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala.

Twenty-four teams will  compete in the regional, including Alabama, UCLA, North Carolina, Virginia, Texas, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Kentucky, East Tennessee State and Chattanooga.

A total of 378 participants have been selected for regional competition. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional.

Colonels bring home the hardware

The 2013 Ohio Valley Conference championship trophy wasn’t the only hardware the EKU women’s golf team brought home from this year’s league meet.

Senior Kristen Dorsey was chosen as the OVC MVP after becoming the third Colonel to capture the individual medalist crown.  She also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The Gulf Breeze, Fla., native finished with a 54 hole total of 223, two shots better than second-place Madalyn Everts of Tennessee Tech.

Dorsey was 17th after her first-round score of 79. but she turned on the afterburner in round two and shot the fourth best round in the history of the OVC Tourney, a 70.

She finished with a two over round of 74.

Senior April Emerson was chosen to the 10-member All-OVC Team. Emerson has the lowest stroke average (78.1) on the team, and ninth best in the OVC. She has seven top ten finishes this season, including three in the top five.

Freshman Anna Gleixner was one of six players picked for the OVC All Newcomer Team. The Greenwood, Ind., native has a 79.3 stroke average and two Top 10 finishes this season, including a tie for seventh at the OVC Championship.

Third-year head coach Mike Whitson was chosen as the Bobby Nichols OVC Coach of the Year after leading EKU to its second-ever conference title.

The EKU women’s golf team is losing two sweet-swinging seniors to graduation in April Emerson and Kristen Dorsey but Whitson has two promising international players in the fold for next fall.

They are Sofie Levin from Stockholm, Sweden and Emilie Simmons of Marseille, France.

Whitson said, “Sofie Levin had a wonderful 2012 season and will come in next year with a lot of experience at high levels of competition in Sweden.”

He also said that Simmons had a successful 2012. She finished second in the French National Championship with the Aix Mareille Golf Club in 2010 and individually advanced to the semifinals in 2012.

Whitson is looking forward to coaching these two young ladies and helping them achieve their goals the next four years.

I am proud they will be wearing maroon.

My hat is off to Coach Mike Whitson and all you sweet-swinging ladies for bringing another championship trophy back to that lonesome one in the trophy case.

Good luck in the NCAA playoffs for a spot in the big show and may ye have the wind at your back and thy “A” game all three days.
